Cancun Airport Transportation: Your Packing Guide

Cancun's sun is intense, even in winter. Pack a wide-brimmed hat, quality sunglasses, and at least SPF 30 sunscreen. If you plan to swim in cenotes or the ocean, bring reef-safe sunscreen.

Mexico has strict environmental protections for its coral reefs and marine life. Standard sunscreens containing oxybenzone and octinoxate are prohibited in many areas, including Xcaret and Xel-Há parks. Mosquitoes are most active at dawn and dusk, especially in areas with standing water or lush vegetation.

A DEET-based repellent offers the best protection. Consider after-bite cream as well. While many resorts provide basic toiletries, a small first-aid kit with pain relievers, antacids, and any personal medications is always a good idea.

Avoid exchanging large sums at the airport, as rates are typically poor.

Your packing list for Cancun will vary significantly depending on your plans. For resort lounging, think lightweight swimsuits, cover-ups, and flip-flops. Evenings at most resorts call for smart casual attire: collared shirts and slacks for men, and sundresses or skirts for women.

If you plan a fine dining experience, check the dress code; some restaurants require closed-toe shoes and no shorts. Exploring Mayan ruins like Chichen Itza or Tulum means comfortable walking shoes, breathable fabrics, and a hat to shield from the sun. For a night out in the party district, dress to dance; comfortable shoes are key, as are clothes that can handle the humidity and crowds.
