For a taste of history and culture, the iconic ruins of Chichén Itzá are a must-see, though it's a long day trip from Cancun. A more manageable historical extension is Tulum, perched dramatically on a cliff overlooking the Caribbean Sea; its beauty is undeniable, but expect crowds.

For a different vibe, consider Holbox, a laid-back island reachable by ferry, known for its bioluminescence and relaxed atmosphere, though it requires a significant journey north. Mérida, the capital of Yucatán state, provides a deep try colonial architecture, Yucatecan cuisine, and Mayan culture, though it's a substantial drive west and best experienced with at least two nights.

For Riviera Maya, we recommend a minimum of three nights. This allows for a full day exploring Tulum's ruins and beach, another day for the cenotes near Valladolid, and a third to simply relax by the water.
