Unico Beach: Nightlife Beyond the Sand

Unico Beach sits on a stretch of coastline that, while not isolated, requires a bit of planning to explore fully. You will not find a row of bars directly outside the resort's gates. The nearest cluster of nightlife, including places like Coco Bongo and Mandala, is about a 15-minute taxi ride north into the heart of Playa del Carmen.

This distance means spontaneous strolls to different venues are out, but it also ensures a degree of separation from the constant thrum of the city. Expect to budget for taxi fares, which are readily available from the resort's front desk, or consider pre-arranging transport if you plan multiple stops.

The advantage here is that the resort maintains its own atmosphere, distinct from the sometimes overwhelming energy of downtown Playa del Carmen, offering a quieter return after a night out.

When the evening calls for a change of scenery from Unico Beach, a few spots consistently deliver. Coco Bongo is less a club and more a spectacle, with acrobats, live music impersonators, and confetti cannons creating a high-energy, all-inclusive show that runs late. For a more traditional, open-air club experience, Mandala offers multiple levels and a vibrant dance floor, often spilling out onto the street.

If you prefer a beachfront setting with a more relaxed, yet still lively, vibe, Mamita's Beach Club transitions from a daytime lounge to an evening spot with DJs and cocktails under the stars. For something distinctly local and less tourist-driven, consider La Cueva del Chango, which, while primarily a restaurant, often has live music in a lush, jungle-like setting, perfect for a pre-club drink.

Finally, for a sophisticated cocktail experience, The Thompson Hotel's rooftop bar provides panoramic views of the city and a curated drink menu, a good choice for a quieter start or end to the night.

From Unico Beach, your primary mode of transport for nightlife will be a taxi or ride-share. Most of the recommended spots, like Harry's Steakhouse & Raw Bar or Taboo Cancun Restaurant, are within a 5 to 10-minute drive, depending on traffic along Boulevard Kukulcan. A ride to the more concentrated club area, where you'll find H Roof, might take closer to 15 minutes.

Walking is not a practical option for these distances, especially at night. Confirm the fare with your taxi driver before departing, as ride-share apps can sometimes be less reliable in terms of availability or pricing during peak hours.

Many visitors to Playa del Carmen stick to Fifth Avenue, but the real pulse of the city often beats a few blocks inland. Head to Avenida 30 or 35 for a truer sense of local life. Here, you will find taquerias serving al pastor late into the night, small shops, and bars where the music is louder and the prices are lower.

It is a different energy from the polished tourist zones, a bit grittier, but authentic. Do not be afraid to venture off the main drag; that is where you will find the best street food and a more genuine interaction with the city's rhythm, a contrast to the curated experience at Unico Beach.
