Cancun International Airport (CUN) is your gateway, and getting to your hotel involves a few choices. Pre-booked private transfers offer door-to-door service, often a minivan or SUV, for around $50-$80 USD each way, a good option if you're traveling with a group or have lots of luggage.

Shared shuttles are cheaper, typically $20-$30 per person, but make multiple stops, so expect a longer journey. Taxis are readily available outside arrivals, but agree on a fare before getting in; they might quote $60-$100 USD for the hotel zone. Ride-sharing apps like Uber and Cabify are technically not allowed to pick up at the airport.

While some drivers might try, it's a gamble that can lead to disputes or extra charges. For peace of mind and efficiency after a flight, a pre-booked transfer, private or shared, is usually the most reliable way to reach your accommodation before heading to Xplor Park.

The Hotel Zone in Cancun is a long strip, and while it looks walkable on a map, the reality is different. The R1 and R2 buses are your budget-friendly workhorses, running frequently 24/7 along the main boulevard. For just 12 pesos (about $0.70 USD), they'll take you anywhere from downtown Cancun to the ferry terminal for Isla Mujeres, and crucially, towards Xplor Park if you're not staying nearby.

Taxis are plentiful, but insist on a flat rate before you depart. A ride from one end of the Hotel Zone to the other might cost $20-$30 USD. Walking is pleasant for short distances, perhaps to a nearby restaurant or beach club, but covering several miles in the heat, especially after a day of adventure at Xplor Park, is not advisable for most.

To explore downtown Cancun or venture further afield, the R1 bus is your best bet. It travels from the Hotel Zone all the way to downtown (El Centro), passing by major landmarks and shopping areas like Mercado 28. This bus is safe and frequently used by locals and tourists alike.

While taxis are an option, they will be significantly more expensive for longer distances. If venturing out at night, stick to well-lit areas and be aware of your surroundings, as you would in any major city.

Renting a car in Cancun offers freedom, but proceed with caution, particularly regarding insurance. While the base rental rate might seem low, you'll be aggressively pushed to buy additional insurance at the counter. Understand that Mexican law requires liability insurance, and the coverage offered by your US credit card is often not recognized.

Expect to pay significantly more than the initial quote once insurance is added. The common scam involves pressuring you into full coverage, sometimes claiming the car has pre-existing damage you'll be liable for. Inspect the vehicle thoroughly, photograph any existing scratches or dents, and be firm about the insurance you need.

If you plan on extensive exploration beyond the Hotel Zone and Xplor Park, a rental can be worthwhile, but budget for the mandatory insurance and be prepared for the sales pitch.
