The Edge of the World: Getting Around Isla Mujeres

From Cancun International Airport (CUN), your journey to Isla Mujeres begins with a taxi or pre-booked shuttle to the Ultramar ferry terminal in Puerto Juarez. This drive takes approximately 30-40 minutes. Avoid unofficial airport taxi touts; use the official taxi stands.

Once at the ferry terminal, purchase your Ultramar tickets for the 20-minute ride across the turquoise waters to Isla Mujeres. Upon arrival at the Isla Mujeres ferry dock, you'll find a fleet of taxis ready to take you to your accommodation. While ride-sharing apps like Uber are not legally permitted on the island, taxis operate with set rates for common routes.

For a more direct and comfortable transfer, consider a private shuttle service that can take you from the airport directly to your hotel on Isla Mujeres, though this is the most expensive option.

The northern 'hotel zone' of Isla Mujeres, stretching from Playa Norte towards the mid-island, is easily navigable. The local R1 bus runs frequently along the main road, offering a cheap and cheerful way to hop between beaches, shops, and restaurants. Taxis are readily available and operate on flat rates, so agree on the fare before starting your journey.

Walking is also a pleasant option for exploring this area, especially along the pedestrian-friendly streets near the town center. You can easily spend a day exploring the shops, grabbing lunch at North Garden, or enjoying the calm waters of Playa Norte without needing any other transport.

The downtown area, centered around Hidalgo Street, is best explored on foot once you arrive by taxi or bus. For destinations further south, like The Edge of the World, public buses do not run the entire route. Taxis are your most reliable option for reaching these more remote spots.

Negotiate your fare beforehand, especially for longer trips to the island's southern tip. While the island is generally safe, always be aware of your surroundings, particularly after dark, and stick to well-lit areas when walking.

Renting a golf cart is the quintessential Isla Mujeres experience and the most practical way to explore the entire island at your own pace, including reaching the southern tip where The Edge of the World is located. You can rent them by the hour, day, or even overnight. However, be extremely cautious about insurance.

Many rental agencies will pressure you to buy their expensive, often questionable, collision insurance. It's advisable to pay with a credit card that offers primary rental insurance, as this can often cover damages and negate the need for the agency's costly add-ons.
