More detail
Cancun on a Budget: How to Spend $50 a Day
The Hotel Zone is a tourist bubble priced for Americans on vacation. Downtown Cancun (locals call it El Centro) is where the city actually lives - and where $50/day is completely realistic.
Where to sleep ($15-25)
- Hostels in Centro: dorms run 280-450 MXN ($15-25 USD). Most have kitchens, AC and free breakfast.
- Airbnb private rooms: from $20/night if you book a monthly stay.
- Skip the Hotel Zone unless someone else is paying.
How to eat ($8-12 a day)
- Mercado 23 and Mercado 28: full lunch with drink for 70-90 pesos ($4-5).
- TaquerĂas in Centro: 4 tacos al pastor + agua fresca = 90 pesos.
- OXXO breakfast: ham-and-cheese torta + coffee = 45 pesos.
- Cook your own dinners at the hostel - chicken, rice, veg, beer from Soriana = 80 pesos.
How to get around ($3 a day)
- R-1 and R-2 buses run Centro to the Hotel Zone all night. 12 pesos per ride, exact change.
- ADO bus to Playa del Carmen: 90-110 pesos one way (do not pay tour prices).
- Avoid taxis from the Hotel Zone - they triple the meter. Use InDriver or Uber (Uber is legal but drops you outside hotel gates).
Free and cheap things to do
- Playa Delfines (km 17): public beach, free parking, best Cancun-sign photo
- Playa Las Perlas (km 2): smaller, calmer, locals go here
- Cenote Las Mojarras (1hr by colectivo): 50 pesos entry
- Sunday at Parque de las Palapas: free live music, street food
Cenotes and ruins without a tour
Take the colectivo from Avenida Tulum to Puerto Morelos or Playa del Carmen, then a second colectivo to the cenote. A guided tour costs $80; the DIY version costs $12 and you stay as long as you want.
What to actually skip
- Resort day passes ($120 for a beach you can walk to for free)
- Catamaran tours sold on the street (overpriced, rushed)
- Bottled water in the Hotel Zone (4Ă— the price of OXXO)
Sample 5-day budget
| Item | Cost | |---|---| | Hostel Ă— 5 | $100 | | Food | $50 | | Transport | $20 | | Two cenote days | $40 | | Going-out money | $40 | | Total | $250 |
