Cancún FAQs
- How much should I tip in Cancún?
- 10–15% at restaurants, 20–50 MXN/night for housekeeping, 100–200 MXN for tour guides per person. See the Tipping tool for full details.
- Can I use US dollars in Cancún?
- Hotel-Zone venues commonly accept USD at a poor rate. Pesos are better value and required at most local businesses.
- Is Cancún safe?
- Tourist areas are well-policed; petty theft is the main risk. Use bank ATMs, authorized taxis, and skip timeshare 'free breakfast' booths.
- Will my phone work?
- Yes - Mexican LTE/5G bands match North American and most European carriers. An eSIM is usually the cheapest option for stays over 3 days.
- Do I need a plug adapter?
- Travelers from the US and Canada do not. Visitors from the UK, EU and Australia need a Type A/B adapter; most modern chargers do not need a voltage converter.
- Can I drink the water?
- No. Stick to bottled or filtered water. Most hotels serve purified water and ice.
- What's the emergency number?
- 911 nationwide. 078 for the federal tourist assistance line (CPTM).
